Definition of "case"

A case filed in a bankruptcy court in the United States is a case for purposes of this study. If the bankruptcy cases of several members of a corporate group are pending before the same court at the same time, and result in the confirmation of a single plan of reorganization, the cases together constitute one case for purposes of this study. Ordinarily, this will only occur when the cases have been consolidated, administratively or substantively. Examples are Zale Corporation / Gordon's Jewelers / Zale Credit and Federated Department Stores / Allied Stores.
