Occupational Wages and Hours of Work and Retail Food Prices - Occupational Wages and Hours of Work and Retail Food Prices
Statistics from the ILO October Inquiry

2005, 246 pp.

ISBN 92-2-016580-5
75 Sw.frs.; US$60; £40; 60 Euros
Trilingual English/French/Spanish

This volume presents the latest results of the ILO October Inquiry, a worldwide survey of wages and hours of work relating to 159 occupations in 49 industry groups and of retail prices of 93 food items, conducted with reference to the month of October each year. It was initiated in 1924 to give effect to a resolution of the First International Conference of Labour Statisticians (1923), and has been conducted regularly ever since. A major revision and expansion of the Inquiry was introduced in October 1985.

The occupations and industry groups covered comprise, as far as possible, those which are important in terms of the number of persons employed in them, those which fall within the scope of ILO Industrial Committees and similar bodies and those which are important in terms of employment of certain types of workers (such as women, salaried employees and so on). The food items covered are, to the extent possible, representative of the dietary habits in countries throughout the world.

Overall, my opinion of this book is very positive."
- Mariano Ruiz Espejo, Universidad Pontificia Comillas, Madrid, for the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, Vol. 168, March 2005.

The consumer price index (CPI) measures the rate at which the prices of consumer goods and services are changing over time. It is a key statistic for purposes of economic and social policy-making, especially monetary policy and social policy, and has substantial and wide-ranging implications for governments, businesses, and workers as well as households.

This important and comprehensive manual provides guidelines for statistical offices and other agencies responsible for constructing CPIs and explains in-depth the methods that are used to calculate a CPI. It also examines the underlying economic and statistical concepts and principles needed for making choices in efficient and cost effective ways and for appreciating the full implications of those choices.

The following international organizations, concerned both with the measurement of inflation and with policies designed to control it, have collaborated on the Consumer Price Index Manual: Theory and practice: the International Labour Organization, the International Monetary Fund, the Organisation for Economic and Co-operation and Development, the Statistical Office of the European Communities (Eurostat), the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe and the World Bank .

This text assembles much of the best data on the teaching profession produced in the last few years. It presents information produced by the principal international organizations working on these issues in a form which focuses attention on the main issues. It looks at the conditions under which teachers work as well as the policy trade-offs governments often face in ensuring teaching and learning opportunities to meet the expectations of citizens for universal accessible and high quality education.

While addressing these questions, the book presents an array of indicators on teachers and the teaching profession and:
  • outlines the context of teachers and teaching by contrasting demand and supply broadly between developed and developing countries
  • examines the composition of the teaching force in different regions and countries
  • offers comparative analysis of the qualification of the teaching force
  • examines the conditions of service including working time and teaching time, class size and salary
  • analyses the changes in the structural characteristics of education systems and how they affect teaching and learning conditions and translate in to higher and lower costs per student

Information is drawn from various sources including: European Network for Information (Eurydice), International Bureau of Education (IBE), International Labour Office (ILO), Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Measuring the Non-Observed Economy. A handbook
2002
, 249 pp.
ISBN 92-64-19745-1
80 Sw.frs.; US$50; £32.95; 55 Euros

This Handbook identifies and promotes best practice for measurement of the non-observed economy that is consistent with international standards and, in particular, with the 1993 System of National Accounts. It offers useful advice on how to obtain stand-alone estimates of the informal sector, of underground production, of household production for own final use, and of some illegal activities.

This resource provides insightful guidance for those involved in the collection of macroeconomic statistics and the preparation of the national accounts as well as anyone concerned with overall levels of economic production. As it stands, there is a plethora of alternative measures of the underground, hidden, shadow economy available - this Handbook explains why these measures are all different and which can be regarded as the most reliable.

Fourth Edition on diskette
ILO
ISBN 92-2-110474-5
.250 Sw. frs; US$225 ; £135

This database contains estimates and projections of the total population, the activity rates and the economically active population (labour force) by sex and five-year age groups (from 10 to 64 years and 65 years and over) for the period 1950-2010 at ten-year invervals plus 1995, and estimates of the distribution of the labour force by sex and major sector of economic activity, i.e. agriculture, industry and service, for the period 1950-1990. Separate results are also presented for manufacturing for the years 1980 and 1990. The data cover all countries and territories of the world which had at least 200,000 inhabitants in 1990 (178 countries and territories), plus their aggregations into regions, major areas and the world, for a total of 207 geographical units.

The activity rates are derived by estimating and adjusting national statistics reported to the ILO ; their projections are based on trends in activity rates by sex and age group observed in the countries and territories over the entire referece period or over part of it. The population estimates and projections were provided by the United Nations Populations Division (« World Populations Prospects 1950-2050 : The 1996 Revision »).

The Economically active population, 1950-2010 was completed in December 1996 and corresponds to the fourth round of the ILO programme on estimates and projections of the economically active population ; previous editions were published in 1971, 1977 and 1986.
