Steps taken to keep international labour standards up to date

The revision of international labour standards aims at ensuring their updating, increasing the coherence of the standards system and, with regard to Conventions, facilitating their ratification.

* Which international labour standards are revised? Each ILO Convention contains a provision which refers to the possibility its revision.

See a list of all ILO Conventions.

* Policy regarding the Revision of Standards. The Governing Body of the ILO has created a Working Party entrusted with the task of carrying out a case-by-case examination of possible needs to revise International Labour Conventions and Recommendations.

Decisions of the Governing Body on Policy regarding the Revision of Standards.

* Methods of revision of Conventions The Standing Orders of the Conference provide a specific procedure for the revision of Conventions, but this procedure has not been used for many years. In practice, since the 60s, the procedure which normally applies for the adoption of new standards has also been used for the revision of existing Conventions.

* The effect of revising a Convention. An important aspect of the revision process is the effect it has on the older standard.
