The Faces of Ability
![]() |
Welcome to the AbilityAsia Web site, which represents the International Labour Organization (ILO)'s Disability Programme in Asia and the Pacific Region. The Faces of Ability (shown right) are among the 238 million people with disabilities of working age in the Region. These trainees, entrepreneurs, workers and managers demonstrate that if given a chance women and men with disabilities can be successful in the workplace and marketplace.
Like everyone else, people with disabilities need education, skills training and job or business development opportunities to enter the workplace or start their own businesses. Some may also require specialized services or assistive devices - small investments in ensuring lifetimes of productivity and contribution.
Yet, for every Face of Ability shown here, there are millions
of unseen people with disabilities who cannot access the very services
and opportunities they need in order to be able to lead active,
independent and productive lives.
Many governments across the region are taking legislative and policy action to change the situation. Non-governmental and civil society organizations are promoting rights and good practices. Enlightened employers, who value a diversified workforce, are positively utilizing the huge potential of workers with disabilities.
Trade unionists are understanding that they need to protect the rights of disabled and injured workers. And people with disabilities are organizing self-help and advocacy groups to promote equal access and treatment.
By utilizing this Web site, you will learn more about the many efforts of the ILO and its social partners to promote equal treatment and opportunity for people with disabilities. You will also discover more Faces of Ability---people who are succeeding in their work lives.
