What is the KILM?

The Key Indicators of the Labour (KILM) is a multi-functional research tool of the ILO. The KILM is:

  • a comprehensive database of country-level data on 20 key indicators of the labour market (listed in full on the right) from 1980 to the latest available year. In this context, the KILM can serve as a tool for policy-makers and researchers in monitoring and assessing many of the pertinent issues related to the functioning of labour markets.

  • a training tool on development and use of labour market statistics. Each indicator is accompanied by descriptions of the standard international definition of the concept and measurement procedures, guidelines on how the indicator can be used in analyses of labour market issues, and words of cautions on comparability limitations.
  • highlights of current labour market trends. The trends identified in an analysis of each indicator accompany each indicator manuscript, with graphics to display results.

  • analyses of key issues in the labour market. In the KILM 4th Edition, the three "key" issues analysed in depth using the KILM data are A) trends in the employment intensity of economic growth, B) global trends in wages by sector and occupation and C) unit labour costs, productivity and international competitiveness.

KILM 4th Edition is now available

The latest KILM report provides the evidence to show that global economic growth is increasingly failing to translate into new and better jobs that lead to a reduction in poverty. Within this global trend, different regions show mixed results in terms of job creation, productivity results, wage improvements and poverty reduction

“The key message is that up to now job and income security for the world’s workers has been an afterthought in global development. Globalization has so far not led to the creation of sufficient and sustainable decent employment opportunities around the world. That has to change, and many leaders are increasingly aware of the need to make decent work for all a central plank of all economic and social policies. This report can be a useful tool for promoting that objective.” - ILO Director-General Juan Somavia.
